Vie GPS glove concept designed with athletes in mind

Posted in Design/Concept by Alex Sydell on February 11th, 2008

Vie conceptThis glove, designed by Du Tran Nguyen at Monash University, turns the back of your hand into a GPS receiver created to allow you to track your position at all times on its e-paper display.

It is designed for athletes, mainly runners, to be able to plan out routes and track their speed and other relevant information. Feedback from the glove on the display or from a vibrating alert can let them know if they are going too slow or too fast, or if there is a turn coming up. The system is fully customizable.

The glove can also communicate with other Vies via Bluetooth as well as send out an SOS in case of an emergency.

Although it certainly looks cool, we doubt many people have a necessity for a glove like the Vie. However, some rich runners could definitely benefit from a gadget like this.

Toyota thinks cars should brake on their own

Posted in Tech/Sci News by Alex Sydell on February 11th, 2008

Toyota Navi Break AssistToyota has developed a system that automatically puts on a car’s brakes when it expects a stop sign. The Navi Brake Assist system works by combining data from the GPS system and a rear-mounted camera to know exactly when a stop sign is coming up and using that data to help you come to a stop at the perfect spot.

It sounds a bit unsafe, but the system uses the camera to cross-reference road markings with the locations of stop signs it expects to make sure the car is exactly where it thinks it is. Once the car is within 100 meters of a stop sign, the Navi Brake Assist signals with a sound and soon after starts applying the brakes on its own.

A system like this is hard to get right as any sort of software bugs could mean huge trouble. The system is undergoing trials in four Japanese cities right now, so we’ll see how well it really works.

Modu modular phone wants to combine all gadgets into one

Posted in Gadgets by Alex Sydell on February 7th, 2008

ModuA new device dubbed Modu wants to be your only gadget. Modu is a barebones cellphone which can slide into other gadgets such as a media player, a GPS, or a stylish keypad for the cellphone.

The device can be completely modified so there are almost unlimited possibilities for what it can do and look like. Although simply changing the skin of the cell phone is one option, it’s also possible to turn the phone into just about anything else. An anything else with calling ability, that is.

It appears that Modu is trying to take on big competitors such as the iPhone. However, instead of trying to have it all in one, it is trying to put one into all.

Although the pictures are rendered and the phone is a concept for now, Modu has a release date of October 1st set in Israel, Italy, and Russia. Of course it would make its way to the US soon after as most gadgets do. The price is said to be around $300 for the Modu and two jackets. There will be a total of 10 jackets available at launch.
