It looks like those official third-party iPhone applications may be making their way to our phones via iTunes. A slip-up by Tiny Code revealed the following:
“Tiny Code no longer produces fixes or applications for firmware 1.1.3. We can’t say much, but we are working with Apple and with their SDK for the next firmware release and SDK applications and we shouldn’t be missed for long. We will no longer update our Installer.app repo for legality reasons and you should see us soon on iTunes.”
The message has since been taken down from the site.
Maybe Apple is giving developers and easy way to sell their apps, and maybe Jobs wants to make some money from the iPhone SDK (rumored to be announced soon) for himself. Either way, it looks like this rumor may have some truth behind it.
We’ll post more info on the iPhone SDK when it’s announced, so stay tuned!

Soon, thanks to Apple’s deal with Starbucks for free WiFi at their stores, you’ll never have to see your name misspelled on your Cup of Joe again.
It looks like Starbucks is developing a program for the iPhone and iPod Touch that will let you order just about anything on their menu right from your device. You can also completely customize your coffee by selecting the size, type of milk, and cream, and even add a note to the order.
To top it off, you can even pay for your order from the program via a special Semacode that it displays.
The program also lets you save your favorites for a one-touch order when you’re in a hurry. Although this is certainly not helping create interaction between people, it looks like a quick and easy way to order coffee for Starbucks regulars. We’re excited to see this in action. Check out the gallery after the jump. Read more »

Financial analysts are predicting a 3G iPhone by midyear due to ever decreasing inventory of the current iPhone model in addition to growing demand for a 3G model. A 3G iPhone would also greatly boost the phone’s presence in European countries, making it seem like the next obvious step for Apple.
3G technology allows for high speed wireless access, which would greatly improve the user experience of the iPhone. 3G is not widely deployed in the US currently, and having a 3G iPhone would greatly widen the potential audience for the device. It would also provide just the boost needed to reach the 10 million iPhones sales goal by the end of 2008.
We hope to see a 3G iPhone very soon, perhaps even as early as the last week in February.

Looks like the iPhone (and the iPod Touch for that matter) will finally receive long overdue flash player support. We have no idea why this wasn’t originally included, but people like to speculate and say it has to do with flash player using too much battery life up too quickly. That does make sense, but it still seems odd they would wait so long to include support for what has become a major part of modern internet content.
Props to Apple for patching up a major complaint of the iPhone/iPod Touch. Expect to see this soon.

As the company puts it, the XPERIA X1 “redefines premiumness,” and from the looks of the phone we wouldn’t say anything less.
The X1 has all of the features that the iPhone is missing, and then some. This one really does seem to be poised to become the phone of all phones.
The XPERIA X1 has a 3 inch VGA touchscreen sporting a resolution of 800×480. A fully functional QWERTY keyboard slides out from the side for all of your messaging, emailing, and web browsing needs. Of course to do that you need a fast connection as well, so, unlike the iPhone, the X1 supports 3G HSDPA for data transfer speeds up to 3.6Mbits.
The phone has an ‘always on’ internet connection, the ability to send and receive files while in a call, streaming video support, and a video call feature.
For more details, check out the product page here.
No word on price or availability yet, but we can’t wait until the X1 makes its way Stateside. Well done, Sony. Another picture after the jump. Read more »

Ahhh, the Apple rumors are flying once again and this time it’s an event that could take place toward the end of this month.
Although nothing is for certain, the source seems credible so mark the week on your calendars. Of course, no one has any idea what the even will be about, but speculation is that it will announce the iPhone SDK that Apple has been promising for some time.
Of course, we won’t mind a 3G iPhone or a new laptop, but either way be ready for some exciting updates - be it hardware or third-party applications on your iPhone.

Apple has upgraded their iPhone and iPod Touch lines by doubling their storage. The new 16GB iPhone and 32GB iPod Touch are shipping immediately and are expected to be in stores within a few days. Both new models retail for $499.
DVICE also has some interesting predictions on where this trend is headed. They are forecasting a 256GB iPhone by September 2010. Now that’s big!
This upgrade is great news for the media junkies out there. Although great devices, the iPhone and iPod Touch are limited by the amount of storage they offer. Now that these two are coming up to par in storage, they will be much harder to beat.

Today Garmin announced their brand new nüvifone, a GSM HSDPA smartphone running Garmin’s own operating system centered around GPS navigation.
The phone will feature a 3.5 inch touchscreen display with three primary icons displayed on it - “Call,” “Search,” and “View Map.”
As far as data, the nüvifone will use a 3.5G connection to power an integrated web browser, data connectivity, personal messaging, and personal navigation functions. The device will also tap into Google local search to provide all sorts of points of interest close to the user.
“The nüvifone is an all-in-one device offering unmatched integration of utility and function in a single mobile device,” said Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and COO. “This is the breakthrough product that cell phone and GPS users around the world have been longing for - a single device that does it all.”
We’re excited to see this thing on the shelves in late 2008. It looks like it has great potential to compete with the iPhone, especially if it’s priced just right.
