iCub baby robot to be taught to speak

Posted in Tech/Sci News by Alex Sydell on March 2nd, 2008

iCubResearchers at Plymouth University will soon begin experiments to find out if a humanoid baby robot, called iCub, can be taught to talk.

Over the next four years, robotics experts and language development specialists will work together to help iCub “grow up.” Some typical experiments include inserting objects of various shapes into corresponding holes in a box, serializing nested cups, and stacking wooden blocks. iCub will also be asked to name objects and actions such as “robot puts stick on cube.”

The project is believed to be the first of its kind in the world. It aims to develop humanoid robots which can learn, think, and talk.

“The outcome of the research will define the scientific and technological requirements for the design of humanoid robots able to develop complex behavioural, thinking and communication skills through individual and social learning,” said Angelo Cangelosi, Professor in Artificial Intelligence.

This could potentially be a huge advance for artificial intelligence, but it also has potential to be just plain creepy. Look at the face they put on the iCub… can you imagine that thing talking to you? However, it’s still great to think that we can create something that can learn and think just like a human. Hopefully something good will come of this, and not some robot race that will decide to turn on humans a la Matrix.

Wow, this stuff is crazy. There needs to be some restrictions on this stuff overseas.

Cool but a slippery slope. Check out this article, it’s a comedic but still plausible view of artificial intelligence. The problem is that people who develop this stuff are SO smart, they are stupid and will undoubtably let things get out of control. http://www.alienreviews.com/b/robot-revolution.htm

    long term that is…
